In 1907 Bliss Dee, the school principal, was able to convince several of the
boys to play the game of basektball, a girls' sport at the time. Mr. Dee is responsible for starting and coaching the first boys' teams in Collinsville. The members of this first team were, Matt Welch, Ralph Mabbs, Gayle Windsor, Ulm Harrison, Roy Johnson and John Snadden.
The practice sessions had to be against the girls as not enough boys were on hand to have two teams. The first game was played in the school yard at O'Fallon, and the first home game was a return game against them in Temperance Hall. This building was located across the street from City Hall on South Center Street, and at the rear of what was later the Post Office.
