With the resignation of Coach Placek the Board of Education found itself without a coach. With World War II going on, coaches just weren't available. They found the only solution would be to give still another job to their Principal and Superintendent, D. K. Darling. Darling had coached previously for the Junior High School, and he was a great all-around athlete at Illinois State Normal University.

Except for a mid-season slump where the 1945 Kahoks lost five out of six games, they played well. They finished second in the Conference but won both the Regional and Sectional Tournaments to advance to the State Tournament.

At Champaign, they met a powerful Decatur team and lost 77-45. Decatur went on to win the State Championship.

In one year Coach Darling compiled a record of twenty-six wins and nine losses.
