Allen Metternich's first job was to rebuild a team that had lost most of their key players through graduation. Lack of height was the first problem facing him since the tallest player on the team was only six feet one. One point in their favor was the elimination of the center jump after each basket. This rule change came at the right time as far as the Kahoks were concerned.

After losing their first game, the Kahoks went on and defeated most all of their opponents, only losing a total of four games during the regular season. In the Regional Tournament they lost the final game to Wood River but were able to advance to the Sectionals. Again, losing the final game and ending the season with a record of twenty-one wins and six losses.

Coach Metternich developed another respectable team during the 1938-39 season. The team won second place in the Conference, won the Regional Tournament but lost the Sectional to Wood River, a team they had defeated twice earlier in the season.

The Kahoks finished third in the conference during the 1939-40 season and were able to advance to the Sectional Tournament. They lost the first game to Livingston 32-30. One of the highlights of the season was defeating Granite City 41-28. This same Granite City team led by Andy Phillips won the State Championship.

The 1940-41 team only finished third in the Conference and lost the finals of the Regional Tournament, but they were able to win the Sectional Tournament and advance to the State Quarter finals in Springfield. This year the top sixteen teams were divided into four quarterfinal locations and only the top four teams advanced to the State. Collinsville lost to Urbana in the first game.

During the 1941 season, the new gym was completed and first used on February 27, 1941. The Kahoks defeated Vandalia, 43-28.

Coach Metternich coached his fifth and final year in the 1941-1942 season. This team, too, proved to be of the Collinsville style as they won most of their games, finishing with a record of eighteen wins and eleven losses. The Kahoks won the Regional Tournament played at Highland, but lost the championship game in the Sectional, 40-38, to Pinckneyville.

Coach Metternich was scheduled to coach the 1942-1943 Kahoks but shortly after school had started, asked for his release from his contract so that he might accept a job as Superintendent of Schools at Bluff, Illinois.
