Tom was Collinsville's fourth All-American, sixteenth All-Stater and the starting center all three of his high school years.
Tom started well as he scored 25 points his first varsity game during his sophomore year. He ended the season by leading the Kahoks in scoring with a total of 549 points for an average of 19.4 points per game. He also led in rebounds with a total of 220.
During his junior year, Tom again led the team in all departments. He scored 603 points for an average of 19.4 points per game and 279 rebounds.
His senior year was his greatest. Tom scored an amazing 889 points in 27 games for a record average of 32.9 per game. During this year Tom scored 48 points to set a new home floor scoring record for one game. He also set a new school record of 50 points against Alton in the Carbondale Holiday Tournament. His four game total in the tournament of 146 points is still a record.
Following high school, Tom was an outstanding basketball player at the University of Kentucky.
